The Wayne County Fiscal Court met in regular session last night (Thursday) and approved a resolution that translates into an additional $250,000 in state highway department funds for blacktopping projects in the county. County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin said that county had been awarded $231,000 from the state for blacktopping projects, which is part of money that is given to every county in the state. But Wayne County was among a handful of counties to receive additional discretionary funding and that will bring the total to nearly $500,000 this year. The paperwork has to be approved for both set of funds before work can begin.
Rankin and all four magistrates have worked together to put a plan in place regarding roads that will be included in both these projects. The county also has some road funds that will be used for blacktopping projects, that the road department will handle locally.
In other action during the meeting, the court approved the sheriff’s tax settlement, as well as the reappointment of Mary Lou Brown and Bill Bush to the Northern Wayne County Ambulance Service District.
The court also discussed the problem of road signs that are being taken, making it difficult for emergency responders to find homes in the county. Often, signs are taken just days after they are put up, according to officials. County Attorney Lee Tobbe noted that this is a serious offense and those who have been convicted of this crime have paid stiff fines and probation. This kind of theft can carry a jail term of a year, he also noted.
