Kentucky Encourages Safe Holiday Travel

With the holiday season here, Kentucky law enforcement is intensifying efforts to ensure road safety. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running through January 1, 2024, aims to reduce impaired driving incidents.

“We urge everyone to prioritize safety during this festive time,” said Bill Bell, Executive Director of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Office of Highway Safety. “Drunken driving crashes are entirely preventable. Please plan ahead and designate a sober driver or use a ride-sharing service.”

NHTSA data reveals a concerning trend of increased impaired driving crashes during the holidays. In December 2021, over 1,000 people lost their lives in such incidents.

“Drugs and alcohol impair judgment and driving ability,” warned Louisville Metro Police Department Sgt. Ron Fey. “We’ll be actively patrolling for impaired drivers throughout the holiday season.”

Alex Otte, a Kentucky native and former MADD National President, shared her harrowing experience as a victim of a drunk boating accident in 2010. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving.

By making responsible choices, we can all contribute to safer roads and a joyous holiday season.
