Monday evening, the Monticello City Council held a short Special Meeting to approve a resolution for the West Monticello Sewer Project. The Council voted to approve the project by a 4 to 1 vote. Councilman Alan Vaughn was the lone no vote, he questioned if the Monticello Utility Commission could take on the debt for this project without raising rates again. The cost of the project is 8.7 million dollars, however the financing for the project would be a split between grant money and low interest loan. The new sewer will replace antiquated lines that were originally installed in the 1970’s. The Council was informed that in times of heavy rain, the system leaks raw sewage. The Council had a quick discussion on the status of Provulas, with no action taken. Mayor Kenny Catron said he would update the Council on Provulas at its next meeting. Provulas has announced its intent to locate in Monticello in the former Wayne County Middle School Building.
