Monticello-Wayne County Parks & Recreation Board met in regular session
Tuesday evening at the Aspire Center. Vice Chairman/Judge Executive Scott
Gehring and board members Melinda Wixson, Tracie Sexton and Wade Upchurch
were present along with Director Shane Blevins. Chairman/Mayor Kenny Catron
and board members Ruben Lee and Jeff Sexton were all absent.
Director Shane Blevins updated the board concerning on going preparation for the
upcoming Wayne County Fair, and the tennis court resurfacing, which he hopes
will be completed by mid-July.
Director Blevins told the board that the first ever “1792 Spooky Que State Pork
BBQ Championship” will be held at the park October 31st and November 1st
.
Blevins said the event is sponsored by the Kansas City BBQ Association, and
more details will be released as the event draws closer. Blevins said initial
estimates are for nearly 50 vendors to participate in the event.
On recommendation of Director Blevins, the approved construction of a new
fence, covering an area of 360 feet. Blevins said the black chain link fence will
cost $16,970 and be completed by Fulton’s Dozer Service & Pipe Supply – Fence
Division – of Monticello. After some discussion, both Blevins and Judge Gehring
agreed that with recent price increases the quote was reasonable. On motion made
by Wade Dick, and seconded by Tracie Sexton, the board voted to move forward
with the project.
Financials for May 2025 reveals $8,607.88 in income was generated, broken down
as follows:
Park $550.00
Pool $600.00
Aspire Center $420.00
Camp League sponsor $260.00
Concessions $5,676.00
Credit Card $1,101.88
For July ‘24 through May ‘25, the total income is $144,925.67.
Next meeting of the Parks & Recreation board will be July 22nd at 5 PM at the
Aspire Center.
