Wayne Library Board meets, discusses upcoming initiatives

The Wayne County Public Library Board of Trustees met Wednesday afternoon for its
regular monthly session with Chairperson Sandra Riddle and members Katina
Shearer, Ashley Thompson, Barbara Turpin and Wanda Gregory in attendance, along
with Director Logan Anderson.

Anderson told the board that book circulation has declined over the past several years
at libraries across the state. She cited two primary factors: studies showing younger
generations are reading less for pleasure, and the rapid growth of digital media
available instantly through online vendors.

To help address those trends, Director Anderson said the library is working to be more
responsive to patron requests by ordering out-of-stock titles more quickly and
expanding its online offerings. She noted that the library’s electronic circulation
remains strong and continues to grow.

Despite shifting usage patterns, libraries continue to provide significant value to their
communities. A study by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives in
partnership with the UK School of Information Sciences and Blueprint Kentucky found
that for every dollar invested in Kentucky public libraries, there is a $3.01 return on
investment.

Anderson also highlighted several upcoming initiatives. A new “Teen Incentives”
program will provide space for teens to work on creative projects or participate in
activities at the library. Staff are collaborating with Walker Early Learning Center to
host a Literacy Bell Celebration in April recognizing kindergarten reading milestones.
Additionally, the library has partnered with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife
Resources to offer monthly Hunter Education courses for ages 9 and up, with the first
session scheduled for March 28 at 8 a.m.

Anderson reported that a local attorney continues reviewing the library’s Meeting
Room, AI and Request for Reconsideration policies and will present final
recommendations at a future meeting.

In the financial report, the board was informed that as of Jan. 31, 2026, the library has
$2,470,593 in the bank.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for March 18.
