The Monticello-Wayne County Parks & Recreation Board met Tuesday evening at the
Aspire Center.
Chairman Kenny Catron presented a financial statement from Susie Cowan, President of the
Wayne County Fair Board, reporting 11,734 paid attendees at the 2025 Wayne County
Fair and Horse Show. Total gate admissions reached $80,792. Of that amount, the Parks
and Recreation Board received $12,119 along with a $1,200 base fee — bringing the
total to $13,319. Catron also reviewed the August 2025 financials, which showed parks
and recreation income of $28,034 for the month. Additionally, the board was informed
that a golf cart had been purchased for $4,500. The cart will be used for operations
around the park and during events.
In his monthly report, Director Shane Blevins informed the board that the tennis court at the
park is in serious need of repair. He described the asphalt surface as crumbling, with
large holes, noting that it was originally installed over 30 years ago. Blevins
recommended that the base be properly repaired and resurfaced with new asphalt. No
action was taken at this time, but the board will revisit the matter in a future meeting.
On the recreational side, Blevins reported that pickleball is now up and running, fall
soccer is underway, and basketball sign-ups are scheduled to begin in mid-October.
The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Board will be Monday, October 28 at 5 p.m.
at the Aspire Center.
