Sheriff Bobby Jones reports a Pulaski County man is in custody following a traffic stop
late Wednesday night.
The incident began when Detectives from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division
were conducting surveillance in the Parkers Mill area of Pulaski County. Detectives had been
conducting an investigation into Sharmarke Ali, age 20, of Somerset. Detectives observed Ali
traveling North bound on Highway 27. The vehicle Ali was operating had expired registration
plates.
The vehicle turned onto Santee Way, where Deputy Grant Bryant conducted a traffic stop. When
Deputy Bryant approached the vehicle, he detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the
vehicle. Deputy Bryant asked Ali to exit the vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle, Ali informed
Deputy Bryant he was carrying a firearm, which was removed.
While Deputy Bryant was rendering the firearm safe, Ali fled on foot. Deputy Bryant gave chase,
closing the distance and deployed his taser, to stop the fleeing suspect. While fleeing, Ali
dropped two bags in his path of flight. Ali was taken into custody. Detective Tan Hudson, who
was conducting the investigation, arrived on scene to assist, along with Detective Trent Massey,
Deputy Daniel Drury and Lieutenant Richard Smith.
Deputies recovered the dropped bags and identified two bags containing cocaine. A search of the
vehicle uncovered a baggie of marijuana and $14, 841.00 in cash.
Ali was taken into custody and charged with the following:
Trafficking in Controlled Substance 1 st Degree 1 st Offense (> 4 grams) (cocaine)
enhance with a firearm
Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance
No Registration Plates
Fleeing or Evading Police, 2 nd Degree (on foot)
Trafficking in Marijuana (less than 8 oz.) 1 st Offense
Following the traffic stop, a search warrant was issued for Ali’s residence. Upon searching the
residence, Detectives located additional cocaine, marijuana, digital scales, baggies, and
ammunition.
The investigation is still ongoing by Detective Tan Hudson. Detective Hudson was assisted on
the incident by Detective Trent Massey, Detective Lieutenant Daryl Kegley, Deputy Grant
Bryant, Lieutenant Richard Smith, Sergeant Alex Wesley, and Deputy Daniel Drury.
